Absent Notes

Within two (2) days of returning from an absence, a student shall provide a note that describes the reason for absence. The student’s parent or guardian shall sign the note. If the student is eighteen or older or has been declared by a court to be an emancipated minor, the student may sign in place of a parent or guardian.

The note should include the following information:
1. Full legal name of student,
2. Student's ID number and grade written on the note or on the medical document,
3. Date(s) of absence,
4. Reason for absence, and
5. Parent signature and phone number.
***Medical documentation can take the place of the above items.

Make-Up Work

Student’s Responsibility:
Students who have been absent for any reason must make up the work they missed. It is the student’s responsibility to check with each teacher the day the student returns from an absence to determine the work needed to be done as make-up and to arrange specific dates for completing the work and for taking tests, if any tests have been missed. Assignments that were due on the day of the absence will be due on the day the student returns. The student will be allowed one day for each day of an excused absence to make up the assigned work. One day of make-up time is allowed for each day of absence. (Example: One day absent -- one day to make up work; two days absent -- two days to make up work; etc.) Failure to make up the work may result in academic penalties.

Obtaining Assignments:

1. If a student is absent due to an extended illness (three (3) or more days) and wishes to get assignments before returning to school, the student or parent may contact the receptionist as soon as possible and request assignments. There may also be instances when work is needed before an absence occurs. In order to obtain this work, a note should be presented to the teacher explaining the reason for the absence and the dates of the absence. If the absence is considered an excused absence, arrangements will be made to provide the schoolwork.
2. A minimum of twenty-four (24) hours is needed to obtain work for one (1) or two (2) day’s absence and forty-eight (48) hours to obtain work for three (3) days or more. Students who miss classes due to extracurricular activities or prearranged absences are required to obtain assignments prior to the absence. Such work is due the next time the student attends that class.

Major Assignments:
If a student is absent on days that major assignments are due (e.g., term papers), it is the student's responsibility to make arrangements to have the work turned in on the day it is due. Make-up work must be done according to campus, teacher and course specifications.

Making Up Missed Time

When students are required to make up clock hours missed due to absences, they may attend the Clock Hour Class. They will be required to bring assignments to work on during the complete session. (The Clock Hour Class is also used by administrators as an alternate discipline form. Students serving detention in the Clock Hour Class for violations of school discipline rules will not also be granted absence time equivalency during that same detention.) Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from the Clock Hour Class. Students may make up one half of their hours in community service with prior written approval given by their grade level principal. All hours must be completed by the end of the semester in which the absences occurred or credits and TEA forms will be withheld.

Permit to Leave

Students needing to leave early should bring a note to the Attendance Office before first period begins. The note must state the full name of the student, student's ID number, grade level, specific time of absence, specific reason for absence, and the signature and phone number of the parent. Permission to leave may not be requested by phone except in emergencies. Permission to leave that is requested by phone must be approved through a principal. At the time specified on the permit, the student will present the permit to the teacher and then leave campus. Students who leave campus without permission will be subject to disciplinary consequences. Students will receive a tardy for failing to obtain a Permit to Leave prior to the warning bell, which may result in disciplinary actions.

When the student returns to school, the student must report to the Attendance Office. The student should present the original permit to leave and a completed Doctor's Verification Form if requested by the Attendance Office. Failure to obtain a permit to leave will result in disciplinary action.

Late to Class

Tardiness reduces instructional time and disrupts class routine. Therefore, students must be seated in their
assigned seats when the bell rings. Students who are more than ten (10) minutes late to an individual class will be considered absent from class. Tardiness will result in administrative action.
