In
order to receive a high school diploma, students are
required to take four years of English. Several types
of English classes serve the varying needs of our students.
English I - IV
Most students go through our regular English program. It is designed to give
students the communication skills necessary for success in college and
in the work force. These courses emphasize literary analysis, various forms
of writing, and language usage skills. In addition, they include instruction
in speaking, listening, and technical reading and writing.
Advanced Courses
Advanced English I and II emphasize the same communication skills taught in
their regular counterparts; however, the pace and level of difficulty of
the courses increase. These courses are designed to prepare students to
enter the Advanced Placement/IB English program offered to juniors and
seniors.
Entry into Advanced English I and II is determined by an application process
that takes place in the spring for entry into the following fall's program.
Any student is eligible to apply each year. Acceptance is based on a student's
grades, English teacher recommendation, and score on a placement test.
Advanced Placement/International
Baccalaureate
English III is designed to prepare students to take the English Language and
Composition advanced placement exam. Students scoring well on this exam can
earn credit for up to 6 hours of English at many colleges and universities.
Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate English IV prepares students
to take the English Literature and Composition exam. Similarly, students scoring
well on this exam may earn up to 6 hours of English credit at many colleges
and universities. Although students in these courses are not required to take
these exams, they are encouraged to do so.
Entry into AP/IB courses is available through a Statement of Intent, available
in the spring for entry into the following fall's program.
All students are required
to take the one-semester class Communication Applications
(a.k.a. Speech).
English Electives
College Prep is a one-semester class designed for juniors and seniors who want
intensive training in taking the SAT and ACT exams.
Technical Writing and Creative
Writing are specialized one-semester writing courses available
to sophomores, juniors, and seniors.
Each year some specialized
courses are offered for English IV credit. These may include
Sports, and Literature, Science Fiction, and other topics.
